Keeping Your New Year Resolutions

Keeping Your New Year Resolutions

As we approach the end of this year, many of us will celebrate the holiday spirit with friends and family. It is also the time of year to reevaluate goals and behaviors, setting New Years’ resolutions for the upcoming year. Envision a better life for 2019 with healthier eating, weight loss, no smoking, work goals or changes, perhaps continuing education. Positive changes and goals could make life healthier, happier, more productive and enjoyable!

By writing down realistic resolutions and reviewing them often, there is a greater chance you will accomplish them as the year moves forward.  Listed below are a few tips from the American Psychological Association to keep in mind when planning your new year’s resolutions.

Start Small

Start with resolutions you feel you can accomplish, for example, if your desire is to exercise more, set a goal to go 2-3 times per week – not seven. If your goal is to go back to school, perhaps start with one class, instead of two or three.

Change a Few Behaviors at a Time

Unhealthy habits develop over time, trying to change them all over-night can lead to frustration and a feeling of a lack of accomplishment. Don’t try to tackle too much, focus on a few behaviors at a time.

Talk About It

Talk about your plans and experiences with family and friends. Perhaps join a support group (i.e. gym workout, weight-loss, smoking cessation, etc.). Having a support group or individuals to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier, less intimidating and more motivating.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

Be patient, change doesn’t happen overnight. Gradual progress is fine. Keep your focus and take it day-by-day. If you fall short a couple days, regroup and get back on track. Take a deep breath, find a quiet place to reread and review your goals.

Ask For Support

Accepting help from those who care about you strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Therapists have the proper training to understand and properly advise you on how to go about bringing balance into your life as you pursue a healthier and happier lifestyle.
