The “little black dress” or as it is more affectionally known, the “LBD” is widely considered to be a wardrobe essential for the ladies, especially those that are fashion conscious – the fashionistas!
Fashion historians trace the design origins back to the Roaring Twenties era and Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel was a prolific French fashion designer who popularized a sporty, casual chic style as the feminine standard. In October of 1926, on the cover of Vogue Magazine, was the first “little black dress” designed by Coco Chanel. This ushered in a fashion design that is still a staple of today. Chanel sought to remove the depressing connotations associated with the color black, transforming the color of mourning into a celebration of chic, elegance, and glamour. Coco Chanel was a driving force behind the revolution of women’s empowerment, femininity, and elegance!

The LBD can be either a simple or an elegant design that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. It can be worn during the day with a jacket and pumps for business, or in the evening with more ornate jewelry and accessories for a more formal event.
The LBD exploded in popularity in 1961 when the romantic comedy movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was released starring Audrey Hepburn. The black Givenchy dress epitomized the standard for wearing the LBD with pearls. Other notable women are known for their LBD style – Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Diana, and more recently, Kate Middleton.
Today the LBD style is still going stronger than ever. There are so many styles and designs for the LBD, many fashion-conscious ladies own five or more, along with diverse accessories to dress up their look or keep it casual.
